Monks and swords don't mix all that well*. See, monks are pretty much ALWAYS target #1.. you should be making it difficult for people to attack you instead of getting right in their faces. If you try to melee, you'll get rocked.

However, the Warrior's tactics line has a few really good defensive stances that would be wonderful for a monk (Bonetti's Defense, for example). Also the Sprint skill can get you out of trouble if you're attacked.

The warrior secondary can help a monk out with defense - but don't go around waving a sword.

*A possible exception to this is a Prot/Smite monk build, which could be useful-ish on the front lines - but really, if you want to attack, a monk probably isn't for you. Plus, everybody in your group will hate you for not using heals

Defense + smiting + etc can result in a medium tank with damage output. The main good bit about mo/w is while its not so easy to tank since all your defense works through enchantments, if you run into the enemy your definatley going to get aggro.

have a 20 mo/w myself....guess i'll try to toss in my 2 cents

below is my skill/attribute setup(all approx...not online right now...):

~10 heal
~10 smite
~10 protect

Healing Hands
Healing Touch
Reversal of Fortune
Balthazar's Aura
Symbol of Wrath
Zealots Fire
(these are always on bar)

Balthazar's Spirit
Sprint
Balanced Stance
Bonetti's Defense
Shielding Hands
(these will be added/switch around depending on what i'm fighting/situations)

skill setup that i use most of the time would be-
Healing Hands
Healing Touch
Reversal of Fortune
Balthazar's Aura
Symbol of Wrath
Zealots Fire
Sprint
Balanced Stance

from lvl 1-20 mo/w constantly changes roles and change playstyles. if this is your first char, i would highly recommend against a mo/w. in order to play a mo/w the way its suppose to be played, you need a wide variaty of spells/skills from many high lvl areas. you also would need draknor's armor/skills before you could become effective.

as you can see from the skills above, this is NOT a melee character. if you want to melee stuff, go make a w/mo. this character is all about running straight into a large group of mobs and doing massive AoE dmg.

if you're still interested.....below is how i played this char from 1-20

start out either as pure healer (if grouping) or heal/axe (soloing/henching). pure healer part is self-explanitory. if you are going the heal/axe route, bring heal to 4 (to hit healing breeze "cap") raise axe to whatever you need to wear max dmg axe (preferably 8) and the rest into protection. use breeze/mend to tank (don't bother with orison) and shielding hands when you get mobbed.

once you get to beacon, get a friend/runner to take you to draknor's. grab the rest of your spells/gear and respec to the above skill set (i used healing breeze until i got healing hands).

this character is capable of killing masses of mobs very very quickly. i highly disagree with the above posters statement about how "mo/w have a hard to surviving". that is hardly the case. IF the mobs do not strip enchants, it is near impossible to die with this build. baz spirits will keep charging your mana, zealots/baz aura/wrath will deal out massive dmg, and spamming heal touch/reversal of fortune (usually while baz aura/wrath is recharging) will not only keep you alive but will also deal additional dmg. healing hands can be used as a panic button and pretty much an instant heal button. all this together makes for a VERY VERY strong defense. (how else are you suppose to tank 8-12+ mobs at the same time?) although it is very strong, it does have a major flaw. if you get stripped of enchantments, you're probably going to die very fast. aslo, since it is PBAoE.....ranged can sometimes be annoying (but easily countered once you know how to aggro kite)
